Driven by data, obsessed by insights by Maarten Herelikxa
Maarten is one of Neanex’ newer assets. As a graduate in international business (Ghent, Paris), he first gained experience as a business analyst in the fashion industry before joining the Neanex team, where he applies his vision on the Business Intelligence (B.I.) aspect of their business.
The reason for the move towards a more complex sector, where the stakes are higher can easily be explained. ‘I love how new insights can be drawn from data-stacks once you know how to work with them. I loved my work in the fashion industry, but in the end, you always depend on trends and the success of collections. In the building industry, there’s more stability in the output and the workflow, and the challenges are vast, complex and need a long-term vision. This is an environment where I can thrive and grow.’
Neanex supports your team to aim higher.
‘My tasks are extremely varied because we offer a wide range of services. Throughout the entire process of building, constructing, and maintaining a site, we work together with the different parties involved. Our job as consultants is to advise on both the requirements and the flow and treatment of data.
Now we’re aiming one step higher. As you know the Neanex-Digital Asset Register aims to extract useful information from the data sources provided by all parties involved in a building process. Those data are turned into useful instruments for maintenance, cost efficiency and management of the building process.
Business Intelligence & Building Information Management connected.
In fact, there’s no reason to stop at this point. In view of the wide variety of our current clients, there’s also a possibility to use the data in the Business decision process.
It’s all about structuring and streamlining the information flow, rather than drowning in a sea of data. Once you have processed and integrated the data, you can derive knowledge and insights about the current building site.
And once you have more projects, all systematically monitored and managed in the same way, you get new data sets, new insights, that can help with financial analysis, with capital structure, with more complex business decisions.
Business intelligence in itself isn’t new, but it is fascinating to see that technology allows us to dive deeper into those data, not necessarily to obtain more details (which is an interesting side effect), but more specifically to develop new data sets, to gain insights in the business processes.
In doing so we allow our clients, be it the contractors or the asset owners, to gain insights in these very complex building cycles. Insights of on a higher level, allowing them to spread risks, speed up investments and/or group and predict purchases of raw materials.
Rail Baltica, Riga Central Station, at the first stepping stone towards more insights.
I’ve spent a substantial part om my time actively working on these kinds of insights, directly with our team, working in Riga on the new Central Railway Station, an ambitious part of the Rail Baltica project
Of course, all this will not be realized overnight, but prospects are promising.
It’s a fabulous experience to be able to work with highly skilled and driven professionals.
My specific ‘added value’ is that I do not think as an engineer but rather develop my reflections from a business perspective.
In that sense, our target industry, the AECO sector, is a rather traditional one, with limited harmonisation in and between projects. Every project is considered as a specific and unique assignment. A one off project with a one off process. We believe you can standaardize the process on building projects. Looking for common denominators and differences will allow us to add even more value. That’s what I am set out to achieve within Neanex.
Graph Technology enables digital twin in AECO with Neanex
Graph Technology is at the base of a new era of data management. It has given the possibility to manage huge amounts of data and their underlying relations. Graph was a choice Neanex made many years ago and has found its way into construction industry.
Discovering the Nordic Market with Tech Mission to Copenhagen
Neanex is discovering markets with focus on data, sustainability & renewable energy. Denmark has been on our radar for a while and an economic tech mission was ideal to discover more.

Establishing “digitally sustainable” asset registers for construction data.
There is a lot to do about Material & Building Passports in the industry. But we are all looking for a way where to start . This article dives into the complex & technical way of making sure your data is structured & used in a future proof manner. Because we will need the data in these passports for a long time. Neanex makes sure you as an organisation doe not need to bother with this complexity in the back, but you can use the Neanex tooling to make sure you are future proof at all time.
Risk Management for Asset Owners
How do you struggle for asset management to have real insight in the status or your asset? How can we enable control and insight in the right information to make relevant decisions? Do you have data or do you need information. Neanex enables 'smart' asset management to lower risk on high unforseen costs.
Neanex recognized as Key Innovator by European Commission
The Innovation Radar is a European Commission initiative to identify high potential innovations and innovators in EU-funded research and innovation projects. Neanex was detected on this radar as Key Innovator, so we are very proud on our team, technology and consortium partners to be recognised for our game-changing technology.
“A Digital Twin is a dynamic, virtual representation of a building, its assets, processes and systems.”
The SPHERE project pushes the development of a user-friendly SPHERE Platform, an ecosystem integrating services, tools, and solutions from various consortium members together into a Digital Twin. During the four SPHERE pilot projects, information from different sources (e.g., the actual assets, sensor data, simulations) is combined, interpreted, and processed to eventually feed back to the physical building.
How to evolve from document based to data driven. By Mathias Everaert.
I’m personally convinced that smart digitalisation is the first step towards better follow up and insights on daily activities. Also, digitalisation and automation can only be accomplished when you have a good understanding of the industry, market, general problems, complexity and the needs of teams and companies.
Digital Twins for Physical Assets by Neanex & Semmtech
Data is everywhere, with the digital revolution in the AECO industry, the amount of data is even increasing exponentially every day. The generous availability of data allows the creation of a Digital Twin: a realistic digital representation of a physical asset, with bidirectional synchronisation between the two. But there are some challenges to tackle. Catherine Pissens ( Neanex) and Bram Bazuin ( Semmtech) have noted it down in this article.
Jan Van Steirteghem, (BESIX) on the need to rethink the principles of the construction industry.
We cannot fight climate emergency without efforts and fundamental rethinking of what we do. It’s not about marginal changes, but about fundamental ones. And I see opportunities for companies like ours, and like Neanex. Because digitalization and data insights will become more and more important in fighting climate emergency.”
Daan Oostinga, (Semmtech) on the growing importance of digital assets in the evolution towards sustainability in the infrastructure business.
It’s very nice to know that you have a certain resource in an asset, to extract that resource, you need to become precise, you need to know and to be able to simulate, it’s not enough to have ‘a hunch’. That’s not how business decision should be made.
It is al about being more sustainable in every way, not on digitalisation as a goal. Josefien Vanhuyse from Neanex on digital and sustainability.
Becoming data driven is the key enabler for sustainability in construction. At neanex we truly believe that we can offer the key to the castle of more circular way of thinking in building & maintaining buildings & infrastructure . This by giving asset insight at any point in time. Article by Josefien Vanhuyse CCO @Neanex
Material Passport based on Linked Data ft. Heijmans
As we need to give our limited resources an identity to create a sustainable built environment, Neanex strongly believes in the power of Linked Data. Aligned with Heijmans goals to strive for more circular in the way they handle construction materials, we have set up a Material Passport based on Linked Data together.
Know Your Asset Inside Out
Digital Asset Register is the static version of a digital twin to state it in a simple way. Connect information from different sources relevant for this specific asset throughout the project lifecycle. This register provides the single source of truth.
